Online driving growth for Ahold Delhaize

The Dutch grocery retailer Ahold Delhaize has grown to become one of the biggest European grocers with revenues surpassing 75 billion €. Much of that growth has come from online, both during 2020 as well as during 2021.

Since 2019 the total revenues for Ahold Delhaize have grown by 9,3bn€. Out of that growth online has represented 63%.

The share of sales coming from online for Ahold has jumped from 7% in 2019 to almost 14% in 2021. Online is a big business for Ahold in Europe (especially in Netherlands) where online is already 24% of all revenues. This figure includes non-food purely online retailer bol.com with revenues of 2,8 billion. However, even without bol.com, the online share would be around 20%.

The US online business has been smaller, but during the pandemic it started to grow really rapidly. From 2019 the US online sales have grown by +227%.

Of the world’s biggest grocery retailers Ahold Delhaize is among the most advanced with regards to the share of online from the overall business. Alongside Tesco (also about 14% online), they have the biggest share of business coming from online.
